Continuing our discussion on spiritual warfare, you may be asking yourself, “why me?” In spite of what some may believe, spiritual warfare isn’t just reserved for the modern-day versions of David or Paul. If you have accepted Christ as your savior, the Holy Spirit dwells within you. And that makes you a target.
John 16:13 states: “But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come.” In other words, you are a living, breathing, walking, talking vessel filled with the truth. If you were a pond and someone skipped a stone across you, what would splash out? The truth! If you were a tree and a wind gust rattled your leaves, what would flutter to the ground? The truth! So why is this important?
In John 8:44 Jesus gives us some vital information about our enemy. He said, “You are of your father the devil, and you want to do the desires of your father. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth because there is no truth in him. Whenever he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own nature, for he is a liar and the father of lies.”
As children of God, filled with the Holy Spirit-the Spirit of Truth, we stand in direct opposition of everything Satan is and does. Just as embracing a lie can be harmful to us, people who represent the truth are harmful to Satan’s agenda. But you may still be wondering why the truth is such a threat to our enemy. John 8:32 holds the key: “and you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free.” Another clue is found in John 14:6: Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me.”
That’s right! Christ IS the truth. And that truth, Christ, lives within you. And since He is the only way that anyone can be freed from the penalties of their sins, He is the only way anyone of us can be wrenched from Satan’s death grip! And the enemy knows full well, that once we are saved, there is no getting us back. Our destiny is secure.
But that doesn’t stop him from messing with us. Why? Because the last thing he wants is for somebody else, anybody else to embrace that same truth and escape his evil grasp. So he goes out of his way to try to destroy our faith. He does it by getting us to doubt God’s goodness, love, protection, forgiveness, provision and promises. He wants to destroy our testimony and distract us from our purpose. And if those don’t work he’ll settle for simply delaying our progress by whispering in our ear “there’s time enough to do this…tomorrow.”
Sweet friend, like it or not, you are a target. Believe it or not, you are significant. Embrace it or not, what you do and how you choose to live your life carries eternal consequences. So embrace the truth and glow on!
